How Is MOQ Calculated for Custom Packaging Bags?
Planning custom packaging for several flavors, sizes or designs? The minimum order quantity applies to each packaging specification—not simply to the combined number of bags in your order.
At Zhongfeng Packaging, standard digitally printed pouches start at 1,000 pieces per design, size, material and finish combination. Custom-shaped pouches start at 30,000 pieces per specification, and different designs cannot be combined to meet that minimum.
Here is how to calculate the quantity for your project.
Minimum Order Quantities by Pouch Type
| Pouch type | Minimum order quantity |
|---|---|
| Stand-up pouches | 1,000 pieces |
| Flat zipper pouches | 1,000 pieces |
| Eight-side-seal / flat-bottom pouches | 1,000 pieces |
| Center-seal pouches / stick packs | 1,000 pieces |
| Spout / refill pouches | 1,000 pieces |
| Custom-shaped pouches | 30,000 pieces |
Each minimum applies separately to each design, size, material and finish combination.

Can Different Designs Be Combined to Reach the MOQ?
Each design must meet its own minimum.
For example, if you need three flavors in the same standard pouch size and material, with a different printed design for each flavor, you would need:
- Design A: at least 1,000 pieces.
- Design B: at least 1,000 pieces.
- Design C: at least 1,000 pieces.
The minimum total would be 3,000 pieces. Ordering 500 pieces of each design would not meet the minimum, even though the combined order would contain 1,500 bags.
You can order multiple designs together, but their quantities are assessed separately.
Do Different Sizes, Materials and Finishes Count Separately?
Yes. A change in size, material or surface finish creates a separate specification for MOQ purposes.
For example, the same printed design in two different pouch sizes requires at least 1,000 pieces of each size for a standard digitally printed format.
The following are illustrative planning examples:
| Planned order | Minimum total |
|---|---|
| One design, one size, one material and one finish | 1,000 pieces |
| Two designs, otherwise identical specifications | 2,000 pieces |
| One design in two different sizes | 2,000 pieces |
| Two designs, each produced in two sizes | 4,000 pieces |
| One design and size, produced in both matte and gloss | 2,000 pieces |
| One design and size, produced in two different materials | 2,000 pieces |
For standard formats, calculate your minimum total by counting the distinct combinations you want to produce and multiplying that number by 1,000.
For example, two designs × two sizes × one material × one finish = four combinations, requiring at least 4,000 pieces in total.
When describing sizes such as “250 g” or “500 g,” also tell us what you are packing. Fill weight alone does not specify the finished pouch dimensions.
How Does MOQ Work for Custom-Shaped Pouches?
Custom-shaped pouches have a minimum of 30,000 pieces per design, size, material and finish combination.
Different designs cannot be pooled to meet this minimum, even when they use the same outline.
For example:
- One custom shape with one design and specification: at least 30,000 pieces.
- The same shape with two different designs: at least 30,000 pieces per design, or 60,000 pieces in total.
Zhongfeng Packaging does not charge a separate die-cutting mold fee for custom-shaped pouches.

Do Special Materials or Features Increase the MOQ?
Special materials, zipper or spout options, foil stamping and spot gloss do not, by themselves, raise our stated minimum quantities.
However, different specifications still count separately. For example, ordering one design in two different finishes requires each finish to meet its own MOQ.
Available combinations and pricing are confirmed during the quotation review. Share the features you need so we can review them alongside the pouch format, material and artwork.
What If I Need Fewer Than the Minimum?
If your quantity is below the custom-printing MOQ, we can offer existing factory stock or available sample bags.
These can help you assess a pouch before committing to a custom order. Availability depends on the stock and samples held at the time of your request.
Existing stock and samples are not the same as a new custom-printed order featuring your own design.

A Real Example: 10,000 Branded Coffee Bags
One coffee-shop customer ordered 10,000 bags sized to hold 500 g of coffee beans. The request focused on incorporating the shop’s visual elements and logo into the outer packaging.
The order was delivered to the customer within two weeks and received positive feedback.
This is the outcome of that specific project, not a guaranteed delivery time for every order. Your schedule should be confirmed against the specifications, artwork approval and delivery requirements.

What Should You Send for an MOQ Check and Quote?
You do not need a complete technical specification to start. Send us:
- The product you will pack.
- Your preferred pouch format, if known.
- The target fill weight and dimensions, if available.
- The number of printed designs.
- The quantity required for each specification.
- Any material, finish, zipper, valve or spout requirements.
- The destination country.
For multiple products, list each design and size separately. This helps us check the minimum quantities and prepare a clearer quotation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I order 1,000 standard pouches split between two designs?
No. Each design requires at least 1,000 pieces, so two designs require at least 2,000 pieces in total.
Can the same artwork be used on two sizes within one 1,000-piece order?
No. Each size is calculated separately and must meet its own minimum.
Can different custom-shaped designs share a 30,000-piece minimum?
No. Each design must meet the 30,000-piece minimum, even if the pouch shape is identical.
Is there a separate mold fee for custom-shaped pouches?
No. We do not charge a separate die-cutting mold fee.
Can I request samples before ordering custom packaging?
Yes. We can provide available factory samples or existing stock bags. Contact us to check which options are currently available.
